The biggest phony in the state of Rhode Island.

It has been said that corruption requires a sugar coating. Perhaps the same is true for passing anything that is distasteful.
There are appearances, and then there is reality. The reality is sometimes not so wonderful.

Rhode Island is a provincial little state, ruled by ruthless bosses masquerading as nice guys. It has been that way for a long long time.

Take Buddy Cianci, a totally transparent and consummate con man, a two-time loser who got convicted for felonies twice while serving in public office as Mayor of Providence. Recent and current leaders in the General Assembly also resemble tyrants in many ways.

Cianci is now in jail. All his high priced lawyers and substantial support from his powerful political friends couldn't undo his conviction and sentence for racketeering conspiracy. One down, many to go.

Surprisingly, Cianci's spiritual successor may be US Representative James Langevin. Democrat Jim Langevin has perfected the art of the sugar coating. They don't come any more disarming and engaging than the friendly cripple with the sad story, big smile, and the big appetite for special interest giveaways.

In a state that is famous for the iron fist of its ruling Democratic party, and the contrast of its puritanically conservative social mores, Rep. Langevin may be its true native son. Langevin projects a "sweet little cripple" image in the media and in person, but he is really an ultra right-winger on social issues such as abortion  --and an ultra left-winger on political issues such as tax tax tax and spend spend spend.
Thus, Jim Langevin is truly the worst of both worlds, an enemy of civil libertarians AND an enemy of the taxpayers.

Jim Langevin is owned by the unions and the other special interests who endorse him and provide his support. He is an enemy of the RI taxpayers who must pay for his sinecure.
"Screw the taxpayers!" would be an accurate slogan.

Langevin seems to grovel for union backing at every opportunity. There is a question of his competence as he votes for and against bills, and then backtracks and contradicts. His voting record is a disaster. He disregards the interests of the taxpayers to secure his elected position --which is starting to look like a birthright.

Make no mistake, Langevin looks out for #1. Less than honorable groups such as the unions pay him back with their endorsements and votes. The cycle seems to be never ending. Year after year Langevin gets re-elected, and year after year Langevin pays back the unions by turning the taxpayers upside down.

Langevin may be the biggest ass kisser in the state. If it would benefit him, he would sell you out in a nanosecond.

The Evidence:  Langevin's Campaign Finance Report

Prove that Langevin is a union puppet, you say?  Sure.

Langevin's campaign finance report for the first quarter of 2005 alone makes the case overwhelmingly.  Contributions by organizations/ PAC's totaled $92,000 of which $64,500 or 70% were from labor organizations.  Nuff said.  But we cannot leave this subject without highlighting some of the individuals who contributed (again, just first quarter 2005).

Ernest P. Baptista, Jr.
14 Stevens Rd.
Cranston, Rhode Island 02910
Owner:  Gencorp Insurance Group
02/28/2005   $2,100.00

Gencorp is a General Agent for Blue Cross Blue Shield, whose Chairman of the Board is top R.I. labor boss, Frank Montanaro; a.k.a., Mao Tse Montanaro.  For years, local and state public employees' contracts have specified Blue Cross as their insurance provider.  No  shopping around permitted; no public bids to obtain the best price.

Guy A. Dufault
9 Courthouse Lane
East Greenwich, Rhode Island 02818
President:  Cornerstone Communications
02/28/2005  $1,000.00

Dufault is the favorite flak of R.I. labor unions, you know, the guy who treats truth like play dough and puts ethics in the same category as leprosy.

Friends of William Murphy
390 Wakefield St.
West Warwick, Rhode Island 02893
 02/28/2005    $250.00

Murphy is Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representative and the pretty, easily managed puppet of R.I. labor for all of its in-state needs.  (That's a bit of a chintzy contribution there, Mr. Speaker.)

So, there's your proof of the union connection.

Now, you want some professional analysis that Langevin's voting record SUCKS?

OK!

Check out Jim Langevin's voting record compiled by the non-partisan organization vote-smart.org.  How can Langevin keep a straight face when he claims he is representing the best interest of Rhode Island in Washington?"

A prime example is the first item, "Business & Consumers".  It appears Langevin is seriously opposed to small and independent businesses.  Small businesses comprise half of RI businesses .

Business & Consumers

(2001-2002)  "On votes that the Small Business Survival Committee considers most important, Representative Langevin voted their preferred position   0%  of the time."

(2003)  National Federation of Independent Businesses  ...  0%  of the time.

(2001-2002)  National Federation of Independent Businesses  ...  7%  of the time.

Abortion

(2003)  "On votes that the National Abortion Reproductive Rights Action League considers most important, Rep Langevin voted their preferred position 10% of the time."

(2002 - N.A.R.R.A.L did not rate him)

(2001)  N.A.R.R.A.L  ...   0%  of the time.

(1995-2003; he was elected in 2000)  ... Planned Parenthood  ... 17%  of the time.

(2001)  ... Planned Parenthood  ... 0%  of the time.

Budget, Spending & Taxes

(2003)  Americans for Tax Reform  ... 0%  of the time

(2002)  Americans for Tax Reform  ... 5%  of the time

(2003)  Citizens Against Gov't Waste  ... 11%  of the time

(2002)  Citizens Against Gov't Waste  ... 8%

Langevin hasn't always been in Congress, but sometimes it seems like a life appointment. Langevin was also a state Rep. So, let's consider some of Langevin's votes in the RI General Assembly: to apparently win favor with the teachers unions Langevin voted to award teaching certificates to applicants who flunked the teachers' tests, he voted to create early retirement programs for municipal workers which cost the RI  taxpayers millions of dollars,  and he voted to give multi-million dollar tax giveaways to a few shareholders at one RI company --again at the expense of the RI taxpayers. And, there are many more horrible votes.

Why did Langevin vote like this? Apparently Langevin was simply following the speaker who favored these bills.  Langevin is not a leader, he is a follower.. big time! That's the way the game is played in the RI General Assembly. Follow and be rewarded  --or lead, and be punished. Langevin played the system for his own political benefit.

Langevin has a track record of being a follower and being owned by the special interests. Langevin is a union puppet.

The campaign contribution facts show that this is a guy who is owned by special interests, and really doesn't care about the citizens, but he projects a very phony caring image. The voting record facts show that Langevin is very out of touch with his job.
